The project supported
the National Institute of Education and the Ministry of Education
in order to foster disaster preparedness, prevention and mitigation
among school children and youths through disaster safety education
and practice. Thereby th eproject contributed
to improving the physical safety of school communities. Topics
related to Disaster Safety such as natural hazards and climate
change were introduced into school curricula.
On the one hand, pre- and in-service teacher training was enhanced
through curriculum development as well as training of teacher
trainers and lecturers. On the other hand, the introduction
of modules for school projects and related learning and teaching
materials directly supported the ongoing teaching work at secondary
school level.
The project co-operated with 200 pilot schools throughout the
country. Among many other outputs the project produced a vast
array of print materials and a DVD on disaster safety, including
teaching material as well as a self-learning student’s
section.
