Located in the centre of Bahr
Salamat Faunal Reserve, Zakouma National Park (ZNP) was created
in 1963. One of the last intact ecosystems of Central and
Western Africa, the Park was conceived as a buffer zone. The
consortium assisted ZNP and its peripheral zone to capitalize
on the sustainable management system at ecological, financial,
institutional and social level.
With the objectives to maintain the quality of environment
and reconcile the population with natural resources management
criteria, the project advised on sustainable financing and
effective management systems , on conservation of biodiversity
and ecosystems functions. The consortium supported the development
of scientific research in life sciences and initiated eco
tourism destination development. Activities for recreation,
environmental awareness raising and education as well as advanced
training were implemented. Social and economic conditions
based on the sustainable management of natural resources improved
- as reflected in household revenues and social orgnisation.
