Tourism, the world’s largest and continually
growing industry, has a large and increasing impact on both
people and nature. Inappropriate tourism can degrade habitats
and landscapes, deplete natural resources, generate waste
and pollution, and, especially in developing countries, exclude
local people from tourism profit.
On the other hand, responsible tourism can help
generate awareness of and support for conservation and local
culture, create economic opportunities for countries and communities
and at the same time be feasible, competitive and profitable.
If ecologically and socially monitored, tourism can serve
as a means for financing bioreserves and generating (additional)
income for residents.
